Hovattala Rock Wall
From where Häme Cavalry Regiment marched to battle in July 1944. A plaque on a sheer rock wall at Hovattala commemorates the fight.
Combatant's House in Hattuvaara
Exhibition on military history of Ilomantsi and second largest collection of field guns in Finland. Combatant's House was built in 1988 to commemorate the deeds of war veterans.
Orthodox Chapel in Hattuvaara
Prayer chapel and Continuation War observation post in old Orthodox village. It is Finland's oldest remaining example of Karelian village chapel architecture, built in 1792.
Makkola Museum Farm in Hattuvaara
Where Lauri Törni (aka Larry Thorne) and future President of Finland Mauno Koivisto billeted in fall of 1944. Makkola has no fixed opening hours, but visitors may inquire about the matter at Combatant's House.
Sikrenvaara - Kiukoinen
The battle of Hattuvaara began early in the morning of July 30, 1944. The first engagement occurred at Sikrenvaara, followed a couple of hours later by a second clash at Kiukoinen 1.5 kilometers away.
Polvikoski Rapids
Enemy forces that had fought near Kiukoinen had begun a retreat toward the far bank of the Polvikoski rapids in July 31, 1944. The chase lasted only five hours.
Easternmost Point of Finland
The easternmost point of Finland and continental European Union, or East Point, is worth a visit. Nowhere in the municipality of Ilomantsi can a visitor get closer to the Russian border without a special permit.
Lehtovaara Village
During Witer War, in Decdember 1939, Russian troops headed toward the settlement of Lehtovaara with Ilomantsi parish village as its objective. The Finns resorted to the scorched earth tactic.
Parissavaara
During Witer War, in Decdember 1939, the Russians established a billeting area on the crest and slopes of Parissavaara hill on either side of the road. The regiment numbered 6,000 men and 800 horses
Käenkoski Schoolhouse
Site of Winter War Finnish outpost. The Finns established three outposts in late December to keep an eye on enemy movements. The outposts were located south of Lake Koitere, 15 to 20 kilometers from Kallioniemi.
Kallioniemi and Koitajoki River
The village of Kallioniemi, located on the banks of the Koitajoki River, was the second focus of the Ilomantsi battles in the Winter War. During Continuation War battles in 1944 it was a supply hub.
Little Vicarage
The building was major General Erkki Raappana’s command post during heavy fighting in Ilomantsi in late summer of 1944. Near the building, at the edge of the car park next to the water tower, is a memorial plaque mounted on an anti-tank rock.
Big Vicarage
Location of observation post during Winter and Continuation Wars. It stands on Pappilanvaara hill, the highest point in the Ilomantsi village.
Military Cemeteries
Military cemeteries in Ilomantsi are resting place of 419 soldiers killed in Winter and Continuation Wars. The church of the Evangelical Lutheran congregation stands 300 meters to the south of the military cemetery.
